Watch Emma Stone and Maya Rudolph perform stunning a capella Robyn cover with butter tubs
NBC variety show Maya & Marty came to the end of its first season last night (July 12th) after a six-episode run packed with comedy sketches, musical numbers, and surprise celebrity guests.
The finale featured Steve Martin, Kelly Ripa, Will & Grace star Sean Hayes, and Emma Stone – the latter of whom blew us all away with her musical talent in an a flawless a capella duet with host Maya Rudolph, whom we all know has rhythm in her veins.
Performing a cover of Robyn’s “Call Your Girlfriend”, the two insanely likeable ladies sat down with just a couple of butter tubs and their voices, and produced three and a half minutes of beautiful music inspired by Erato – three Swedish fans who uploaded a video of themselves singing the song in their kitchen.
We already knew that Stone could sing from her ‘Pocketful of Sunshine’ scene in Easy A and her audition on VH1’s In Search of the Partridge Family, and Rudolph – the daughter of singer-songwriter Minnie Riperton – has frequently flexed her pipes on screen and stage. But nobody was expecting the level of precision of that butter tub routine; not even Maya and Emma themselves, who look pretty surprised at their achievement by the end of the song.
Springing to mind Anna Kendrick’s cup-percussion performance of “When I’m Gone” in Pitch Perfect, the musical segment has us questioning whether there’s anything these multi-talented babes can’t do.
