Ricky Gervais for the Oscars 2016?
Before you know it awards season will be upon us, and so begs the question – who will lead the pack by hosting the Oscars 2016?
Over at Gold Derby there’s been a hard-fought battle raging for weeks over who their users want to host the acclaimed Academy Awards with the final three contenders in their poll of hosts being Ricky Gervais, Ellen DeGeneres and Robert Downey Jr.
More than 14,000 voted in the poll that now shows Gervais as the overwhelming number 1 choice for the 88th annual edition of the Academy Awards on Feb. 28. Congrats, Ricky!
As of writing, Gervais leads with 73% (10,691 votes), followed by Downey at 21% (3,032) and DeGeneres at 5% (672 votes) with the remaining 1% of users not content with any of these choices – begging the question, are they holding out for another James Franco/Anne Hathaway fiasco?
Despite never previously hosting the Oscars, Gervais made the Golden Globes a must-see viewing for three years in a row (2010-2012) with his take-no-prisoners attitude. Because of this, fans have been clamoring for him to return to the Golden Globes, but maybe its time for him to take on the big guns.
And, if we’re being brutally honest, the Oscars need him. They’ve had two years of “safe” hosts like DeGeneres and Tony favourite Neil Patrick Harris, so isn’t it time for the Academy to branch out, mix it up and bring a wild card to the proceedings?
And while, admittedly, the last tried this in 2013 with raunchy producer/writer/entertainer Seth MacFarlane they received mostly negative reviews, wouldn’t inviting someone cool and controversial like Gervais – who has the hosting calibre they want – be a step in right direction to make them relevant again?
Oscars, Team TV Daily has spoken, #TeamGervais for the win.
