Revelatory new Star Wars trailer has us freaking out
The third and final full-length trailer for JJ Abrams’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens landed overnight, and, having already reached over 4.5 million views in just six hours since publication, we think it’s fair to say that people are pretty excited about it.
The new trailer, which in most countries accompanies the opening of ticket sales for the long-awaited film, gives us more information about each of the new protagonists.
First we see Rey. Played by Daisy Ridley, she is a scavenger and explorer, inhabiting the desert planet of Jakku. “I’m no one”, she says, although clearly she will indeed be someone, as her character clearly evokes the iconic images of both Anakin and Luke Skywalker from the previous trilogies.
We then see John Boyega’s Finn – a good-hearted soldier trained to serve The First Order as a Stormtrooper, and hoping to distance himself from his dark and mysterious past. JJ Abrams has hinted that Finn’s surname has been withheld, for reasons as-yet unknown but inevitably consequential. “I was raised to do one thing. I’ve got nothing to fight for,” he is heard saying.
“Nothing will stand in our way. I will finish what you started”. Yep, that’s sinister-lookin’ mofo Kylo Ren, played by Adam Driver. We know that his name ‘Ren’ is from his association with an organisation known as the Knights of Ren, whose members are really into Sith artefacts and history (hence the visual nod to Darth Vader’s helmet).
And then, in the trailer’s biggest rush, cue Han Solo. “It’s true. All of it. The dark side, the Jedi, they’re real”, he tells Rey and Finn, in a line likely to incite mass cheers from cinema audiences around the globe.
Oh, here’s our bae Oscar Isaac, A.K.A Resistance pilot Poe Dameron, giving Finn a pat on the shoulder. We also know from the new trailer that Poe is captured and tortured by Kylo Ren. But what information does he reveal in the interrogation? Abrams keeps us guessing.
While the trailer gives fans a lot of what they want, we couldn’t help but notice the glaring absence of Star Wars veteran Mark Hamill, who will be reprising his legendary role as Luke Skywalker. Guess they’ve got to keep some surprises under wraps, right?
Anyway, enough of our ramblings… Here’s the trailer for you to watch with your very own eyes:
