Freida Pinto signs on as female lead in Sky’s ‘Guerrilla’ with Idris Elba
Hurrah! Slumdog Millionaire‘s Freida Pinto is about to be on our screens in something other than a L’Oréal advert!
Announced today, Pinto has signed on to play the female lead in Guerrilla – the latest high profile series to join Sky’s growing portfolio of original drama.
We were already excited about Guerrilla when we found out the earliest names attached to the project: it will be written, co-directed and executive produced by Oscar winning 12 Years a Slave writer John Ridley, while Idris Elba will co-star and serve as an executive producer through his Green Door Pictures.
The series, which will air on Sky Atlantic in the UK and SHOWTIME in the US, will explore the street fight against social injustice in 1970s London.
Pinto’s character has been revealed as Jas Mitra – a passionate and politically driven individual who helps to liberate a charismatic convict from prison. We also know that her relationship with male lead Marcus (casting to be revealed soon) will propel her into making the leap from political activism to radical militancy.
Sky describes Guerrilla as “a love story set against the backdrop of one of the most politically explosive times in UK history”.
Idris Elba says of the show: “It’s been a long-time desire of mine to collaborate with Mr Ridley and his work here is nothing short of a masterclass in character building and storytelling. TV is in for a treat.”
In spite of its etymological similarity, Freida’s role in Guerrilla has nothing to do with her appearance as a stripper in Bruno Mars’s racy music video ‘Gorilla’.
