David Morrisey has said he would “love to” be the next Doctor while speaking to fans at London’s Walker Stalker, a fan convention celebrating The Walking Dead.
Morrisey played the fearsome Governor on series three and four of The Walking Dead, and also appeared in the 2008 Christmas special of Doctor Who, alongside many other acting credits.
At a panel on Sunday, Morrisey was asked by fan David from Coventry if he would ever consider the role of Doctor Who if it was offered, to which Morrisey replied:
“It’s a really weird thing that happened with Doctor Who, because I did the Christmas special and it was called “The Next Doctor”. When I did the role I didn’t know that David Tennant was going to announce he was leaving, so we filmed it and it was a great episode. I loved doing it. And then Russell T. Davies phoned me up and said, listen, David’s leaving, it’s called “The Next Doctor”, there might be a rumour starting that you’re the next Doctor, you don’t mind that, do you? I went I don’t mind. He said, just don’t tell anyone you’re not gonna be the next Doctor Who, it’ll get out. I said okay, I can tell my kids though? And he went no. Especially not your kids, because they’ll tell someone in the playground. So for like nine months my kids were saying to me, are you the next Doctor Who? All my friends are saying you’re the next Doctor. Are we moving to Cardiff? I couldn’t tell them.”
“Like this show, I love doing Doctor Who. I’d love to do it. Whether I’m right for the Doctor, I don’t know. I know Peter Capaldi was in the show as a character before he became the Doctor, so it has been done in the past.”
“The answer is yeah. I’d love to if they want to. I love being associated with the show and I’d love to do it again. I did like Jackson Lake, I thought he was a great character and I’d love them to bring him back as well but I really had fun doing it, like The Walking Dead, it’s a brilliantly run show, and also like The Walking Dead, I love the fans.”
