Charlie Cox Honoured With Helen Keller Award
The awards, which are to “celebrate individuals and organizations that have demonstrated outstanding achievement in improving quality of life for people with vision loss”, will be held in New York City on Thursday June 18th.
Of course, Daredevil‘s portrayal of the blind character is predicated on his superpowers — which include ultra-heightened senses of hearing, touch, taste and smell — leaving some viewers complaining that Matt Murdock does not deliver a fair representation of the challenges that a real blind person would face.
Nevertheless, it’s clear that Marvel’s Daredevil is greatly popular amongst fans with visual impairments.
Earlier this month, Netflix announced that it had added audio descriptions for Marvel’s Daredevil — the first time the streaming service has ever done so — in response to fan pressure.
“It was incredible,” said blind journalist and activist leading the campaign, Robert Kingett.
“In fact, me and quite a bit of other ‘blindies’ gathered around, and had a big thing of popcorn and watched the first episode in jubilance.”
It seems that more on-screen champions of those with disabilities are a move in exactly the right direction.
