Andrew Lloyd Webber wants One Direction’s Liam Payne for West End musical revival
Andrew Lloyd Webber wants One Direction’s Liam Payne to perform the lead role in his upcoming revival of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat.
A source told The Sun: “Andrew has told those involved that his dream signing is Liam. He thinks he can bring so much to the role of Joseph, he’s a natural performer.
“There was talk of other pop stars being approached but he wants to keep the bar high and they don’t come much bigger than 1D.”
The musical has not been performed on a West End stage since 2009, when Lee Mead won the reality television programme ‘Any Dream Will Do’ to bag the lead role. The production later toured the UK.
Meanwhile, Payne is currently on a break from One Direction and working on his debut solo album. He and girlfriend Cheryl Cole are expecting their first baby imminently.
The new production of Joseph will mark the show’s 50th anniversary when it launches in the UK this Christmas. The musical was first performed as a fifteen-minute piece by Colet Court School in London in 1968.
Payne first found fame on The X Factor in the UK, joining forces with Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan and Liam Tomlinson to create One Direction.
After placing third in the series, the group went from strength to strength with their first single ‘What Makes You Beautiful’, before conquering America. The rest is history.
